Teacher Spotlight: Mukta Kaur Khalsa — From Student to Founding Teacher of SuperHealth

Dhanjot Kaur

Few teachers carry as direct a line to Yogi Bhajan® as Mukta Kaur Khalsa, PhD, whose fifty-year journey through Kundalini Yoga became the foundation of SuperHealth, a global system for healing addiction and stress.

This Kundalini Yoga teacher spotlight traces her path from a first class in early-1970s Los Angeles to thirty years of direct study with Yogi Bhajan®, and finally to the SuperHealth trainings she leads today from her base in New Mexico.

A Teacher Rooted in Direct Lineage

Mukta Kaur Khalsa began studying Kundalini Yoga in 1972 and started teaching just two years later, in a landscape without the structured teacher-training pathway that exists today. She and her peers practised, studied, and were then encouraged to share what they had experienced — teaching as a natural extension of transformation rather than a formal credential.

That early, unstructured path led somewhere lasting. She became a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher and Lead Trainer for SuperHealth, the system she would go on to build across five decades of work with healthcare professionals, yoga teachers, and people recovering from addiction. Now a days she continues teaching internationally and online, carrying the responsibility of a lineage she has lived for over five decades.

Meeting Yogi Bhajan® in Early-1970s Los Angeles

Her first class was taught by Yogi Bhajan® himself, in a Los Angeles already alive with spiritual searching. She was young and already drawn to that search, and these teachings offered something rare: an experience, not just an idea. That distinction shaped everything that followed.

Thirty Years of Direct Study

Mukta Kaur had the privilege of studying directly with Yogi Bhajan® for thirty years — too many memories, she says, to reduce to a single encounter.

A Night Locked Out in Moscow

During a 1990 trip to Moscow with Yogi Bhajan®, the group found itself locked out of the house where he was staying, standing in the December cold. A Russian woman who spoke no English opened her home to all twelve of them.

It was a simple human moment, and one she has never forgotten. Sometimes the teaching arrives through a lecture. Sometimes it arrives through someone opening a door.

From Student to Certified Teacher

Becoming a teacher in the early 1970s didn’t follow today’s structured route. It followed practice, sincerity, and community:

  • 1972 — began studying Kundalini Yoga
  • 1973–74 — began teaching, as an extension of her own practice
  • Certified as a Kundalini Yoga teacher
  • Became Lead Trainer for SuperHealth Level 1 and Level 2 Teacher Training

For Mukta Kaur, teaching was never separate from practice. When something changes your own life, sharing it becomes natural.

Building SuperHealth — Five Decades of Healing Through Kundalini Yoga

SuperHealth’s story begins with two men in Washington, D.C., and a choice Yogi Bhajan® made to see the human being underneath the addiction.

The Two Men in Washington, D.C. (1969)

In 1969, amid widespread addiction and a deep spiritual searching across the West, Yogi Bhajan® brought two men addicted to heroin into his centre for two weeks, building a fully controlled environment around Kundalini Yoga and meditation. The transformation was extraordinary — and it became the seed of SuperHealth.

From Tucson to Amritsar — A Global System

The early results led to further work and, eventually, a structured system for people facing substance abuse, behavioural addiction, and stress:

  1. A pilot treatment program launched in Tucson, Arizona, leading Mukta Kaur to establish a residential treatment program
  2. The program earned accreditation — and later its highest commendation — from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
  3. In 2004, the Punjab government invited SuperHealth to run a 90-day pilot in Amritsar, India, serving ten clients
  4. Results from the Amritsar program were published in the Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse in 2008 [[VERIFY: exact citation/authors of the 2008 Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse publication]]
  5. SuperHealth now holds NGO consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council

Throughout, one understanding has guided the work: addiction is rarely only about the substance or behaviour. There’s a person underneath it, often carrying pain, disconnection, or a lost relationship with themselves.

The New Six-Module SuperHealth Training Series

Today, SuperHealth’s newest chapter is a six-module training series for yoga teachers, healthcare professionals, counsellors, and anyone working in health and personal development. It opens with the Science of Humanology and moves into epigenetics, trauma, and addictive behaviour — each module standalone, together forming a fuller path through more than fifty years of accumulated work.

Practical Wisdom for New Teachers

Asked what she’d tell a brand-new teacher, Mukta Kaur doesn’t reach for theory:

“Experience what you teach. Do the kriya. Sit with the meditation. A student can feel the difference between information you have memorised and something you have lived. And never forget compassion — you are teaching a human being, not demonstrating how much you know.”
— Mukta Kaur Khalsa

She’s also made peace with something many teachers wrestle with: she no longer needs to convince everyone. Bringing yogic practices into addiction treatment wasn’t always understood, and over the years she learned to stay professional, keep working, and let results speak for themselves.

What It Means to Be a Founding Teacher

For Mukta Kaur, being a Founding Teacher of IKYTA is less about a title and more about responsibility. She has watched Kundalini Yoga grow from a small community into a worldwide practice, and that history has left her with deep appreciation for the generations who came after.

The teachings, she says, don’t belong to one generation — they’re received, practised, and then passed forward with integrity. At this point in her life, she feels especially called to support teachers in building their own experience and confidence. A lineage stays alive because people live it.

Connect With Mukta Kaur

From a first class in 1970s Los Angeles to a system recognized by the United Nations, Mukta Kaur Khalsa’s journey is a living example of what it means to carry Yogi Bhajan’s® teachings forward with integrity.
